A handful of warming spices, water, tea and milk, and you have chai tea! So perfect during fall and winter season.

The warming spices of fresh ginger, black pepper, cloves and cinnamon, with the aromatic, balancing effect of cardamom and star anise makes for a full symphony of flavour! Enjoy! And if you happen to be reading this around the holiday season, pair with a few of these Ayurvedic inspired Holiday Shortbread Cookies!

Ayurvedic Profile of Spices

Cinnamon - warming quality; helps metabolize sugar

Cloves - warming spice, opens up the channels without aggravating pitta dosha

Cardamom - helps digest the protein in the milk

Ginger root - pungent, warming, anti-inflammatory, helps with digestion, relieve gas, and joint health

Black Peppercorn - warming spice, opens up the physical channels

Star anise - warming, pungent opens up the channels, soothing for digestion

Chai Tea

Yield: 2-3 cups
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes

INGREDIENTS

4 cups water

2 cinnamon sticks

8 cloves

8 crushed cardamom pods

Thumb size ginger root thinly sliced

¼ tsp fresh ground peppercorns

1 star anise (optional)

2-3 Tablespoons loose black or green tea or 3 tea bags

½ cup grass-fed whole milk or plant based milk

instructions

  1. Put all the spices with water and let come to a boil for a few minutes.

  2. Add tea and milk and let come to just a boil, then turn heat down to low, and cover with a lid. Let steep for 5 minutes.

  3. With a strainer, pour tea into cups.
