Registered Massage Therapy is offered at Heart Lotus Health clinic only.
Clinically, it depends on the nature of your discomfort and if it's an acute or chronic condition. Some people go to RMTs for the benefit of relaxation on a need to come basis. With relaxation as a treatment plan, I recommend a full body massage at least once a season. Treatment plans, however, are highly individualized. For example, a minor muscle strain may require two or three treatments, with a reassessment and home self-care instructions to resolve the situation, however, more visits may be necessary for others.
Massage is not covered by OHIP. Many Extended Health Plans, however, cover treatment from a Registered Massage Therapist.
Insurance receipts are issued for RMT sessions.
A Registered Massage Therapy session can be done with clothing on. During a massage the body is always covered with a sheet except for the part that is being massaged. A separate written consent by you must be provided for upper chest, breast, gluteal and upper inner thigh.
Massage therapy is a regulated health profession all across Canada, and Massage Therapists (MT) or Registered Massage Therapists (RMT) have exclusive rights to these titles.
In Ontario, Registered Massage Therapists are governed by College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO), receiving its authority from the Regulated Health Practitioners Association Act 1991 (RHPA), and the Massage Therapy Act 1991.
Registered Massage Therapists complete a 2 or 3 year diploma program from an approved massage therapy school. My RMT program at Sutherland-Chan included 2200 hours of training in the areas of anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, clinical massage, clinical theory, hydrotherapy, remedial exercise and nutrition.
Registered Massage Therapists in the province of Ontario participate in a Quality Assurance Program through the CMTO that assists them in the maintenance of high professional standards and quality care of their clients.
